A battery comprising a plurality of plates with electrolyte in between them is characterized in that at least one of the plates is coated with a porous inorganic coating 0À5 to 3 mils thick which contains absorbed electrolyte and the plates are separated by at least the thickness of the coating. The battery may be an alkaline battery, e.g. a Ni/Cd/KOH battery, or a Zn/AgO battery and may comprise alternate multiple anodes and cathodes. The coating may be Ca(OH) 2 , Mg(OH) 2 , or hydrated aluminium or zirconium oxide and may be applied by electrodeposition from a solution of the corresponding salt. Both anode and cathode may be coated. In Example V the plates are additionally separated by a nylon separator. |
