Flame retardant polycarbonate moulding materials are based on (a) a high molecular thermoplastic polycarbonate (b) an alkali metal salt of an (in)organic acid, (c) a tetrahalophthalimide cpd. (I) or (II). in which R is H, 1-4C alkyl, C6H5, C10H7, C6H9X, C6H3X2 or C6H2X3; X is F, Cl or Br; R' is a direct bond, 2-4C alkylene phenylene or p-diphenylene gp; and Z is Cl or Br. and (d) opt. PTFE. Pref. compsns. contain (wrt polycarbonate) 0.02-2 wt.% pref. 0.05-1 wt.% alkali metal salt (b) 0.02-2 wt.% esp. 0.05-1 wt.% (I) or (II), and 0.05-0.6 wt.% esp. 0.1-0.3. wt.% PTFE. The compsns. have improved flame retardant properties. Thus test pieces 127 x 12.7 x 1.6 mm without PTFE are in burning class V-II of the Underwriter's Laboratories UL-94 test; with PTFE, the burning rating is V-O.
