PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently high-gradation record image data together with conventional low-gradation image data. SOLUTION: On an image recording device side, gradations of image data to be recorded are converted to obtain 1st low-gradation information and 2nd high-gradation information. Then information prescribing the correlation between those 1st information and 2nd information is computed as 3rd information. The 1st information is stored in a preferentially referenced image storage area of an image file and the 3rd information is recorded in another area (e.g. application segment) in the image file. On an image reproducing device side, the 1st information and 3rd information which are thus recorded are read out and the 2nd information is reproduced from those 1st information and 3rd information.
