A machine (10) for the automatic knotting of knots (91), especially Persian knots, on a basic fabric having warp yarns (13) and weft yarns is described. In order, with such a machine (10), to allow an automatic rapid and simple knotting of carpets by means of Persian knots, in particular also a large number of knots per square metre being capable of being knotted, the machine (10) has a supply device (20) for the knot material (90), a feed device (19) for taking off the knot material (90) from the supply device (20), thereby forming an open loop and transferring the latter, and a knotting-gripper device (18) for taking off the open loop (80) from the feed device (19) and looping this loop (80) around two adjacent warp yarns (13), introduced between the knotting-gripper device (18) and the feed device (19), thereby forming a knot (91). The knotting-gripper device (18) executes in succession two movements which are perpendicular to one another and to the run of the warp yarns (13) and of which the to-and-fro movement crosses the two warp yarns in succession and the intermediate movement runs transversely from one warp yarn (13) to the adjacent one. <IMAGE>
