In this arrangement, a reference generator and a vernier generator generate pulse sequences which differ by the smallest switchable time interval. Two counters, which can be programmed by a program generator, are started by a clock signal of a frequency divider following the reference generator and are in each case controlled to count down by the clock signals of the reference generator or of the vernier generator, respectively. These counters determine the respective time interval by means of the difference between their output signals.
