Preparation of a 2,3-di-substituted 4-hydroxyaniline of formula (I) comprises (a) reacting a 2,3-disubstituted phenol of formula (I) with a diazonium salt of formula (III) to give an azo compound of formula (IV); and (b) reducing (IV) to (I). X, Y = halo, alkoxy or CN; n = 0-5; Z = halo, alkyl, NO2, CN, COOH or SO3H; A<-> = a counter-ion. Intermediates (IV) are new.
