PURPOSE:To optimize injection rate control after an engine is warmed up by detecting intensity of combustion within a combustion chamber which affects directly vibration and noise of a Diesel engine and controlling pilot injection amount or injection stop period to the optimum value according to the detected result. CONSTITUTION:A combustion intensity detection means 2 is constituted with a combustion light sensor 20 for detecting intensity of combustion light in a combustion chamber 1, an LPF 21 for removing noise-like high-frequency components of the output from the sensor, a differential circuit 22 for obtaining the gradient of the output, and a peak hold circuit 23 for obtaining the maximum value of the gradient. A microcomputer 3 as a means for pilot injection control is made to output a signal according to the detected combustion intensity to control the pilot injection amount or its injection period to control the pilot injection means 4. The pilot injection means 4 is constituted such that a piezo- drive circuit 41 performs charge or discharge against a piezo-actuator 40.
