A hot plate has underneath a glass-ceramic plate (1) a heating plate (2, 4) which bears a heating coil (4). To achieve contactless pot detection, the heating plate (2, 4) is assigned a proximity switch, the sensor elements (9, 10) of which are directed at the glass-ceramic plate (1) and, when a pot is placed on the plate, imitate a signal which through-connects a manually prepared circuit to the heating element (4). <IMAGE>
