A pressure modulator for a hydraulic brake system with anti-lock protection consists essentially of a regulating element (2, 2') which is guided in a cylinder (1, 1') and by means of which the volume of a working chamber (3, 3') situated in the path of the pressure medium of a brake system can be varied. The pressure modulator has an electric drive motor (6, 6') which is connected via a controllable gear mechanism (9, 22) and a screw link actuator (10) to the regulating element (2, 2'). The gear mechanism has a single or double planetary gear set, the internal gears (15, 30, 32) of which can be braked by an arresting or brake system (11, 23). It is thereby possible to actuate the clutch between the drive motor (6, 6') and the screw link actuator (10) and - in the case of the double planetary gear set (24, 25) - to reverse the direction of rotation of the output shaft (28). <IMAGE>
