Satchel-type valve bags made of plastic with relatively low inherent stability cannot be stacked with a straight edge. The invention is to ensure that each bag to be taken off from a stack is in the same position relative to a suction device separating the bag. For this purpose, a table (11) for receiving a bag stack (12) is movable transversely to the side edges of the bags. Via a controlled drive, after the uppermost bag (12a) has been taken over by the suction device (10), the table (11) is moved into a basic position and thereafter is moved into a position such that the filling orifice (12b) of the uppermost bag (12a) is located in a predetermined desired position relative to the suction device (10). The movement of the table (11) is regulated via a light-beam sensor (24) which records a control mark (23) made on the bag. To press down the bag stack (12), there are provided on the suction device (10) press-down strips (19) which are moved as a result of the movement of the table (11). Moreover, they can be moved out of the region of the suction device (10) by means of a piston/cylinder unit (21). The apparatus according to the invention can be used particularly in in-line packaging machines. <IMAGE>
