Compounds of the formula (I) and salts thereof in optically active form, in which R1, R2, R3, R4, A, X and n are as defined in claim 1, are suitable for use as herbicides and plant growth regulators. The compounds (I) can be prepared by processes according to claim 7 via intermediates, some of which are novel, for example of the formulae (III) and (V).
