In response to an environmental disaster, such as flooding, or hazardous materia l spills, a large amount of resources need to be organized and mobilized quickly and effectively. The response effort can involve thousands of volunteers, military personnel, vehicles and equ ipment. Many hours and even days can be spent manually filling sandbags or absorbent booms pl acing them into dikes, maintaining and upgrading the barrier, and containing spilled materi als. The Barrex system automates the process of sandbag or absorbent boom sewing, filling and placement. It allows a small crew to produce a continuous barrier and place it in the form of a dike, or a protective or absorbing boom, eliminating the need for thousands of m an hours of work. The process involves forcing the aggregate material into the tube through a forming channel. The wrapping material is folded over the channel in a circular fashion , to the form of a tube. The two edges are then joined to form the tube into which the aggregate m aterial is forced. The tube is then laid in the appropriate position by a movable chute.
