PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pseudo-outline noise detecting device for estimating the occurrence of a pseudo-outline noise occurring falsely in an animation area in the case where an image in one field is divided into a plurality of subfields to carry out a gradation display and a display device for reducing a pseudo-outline noise using the pseudo-outline noise detecting device. SOLUTION: In a display device which divides one field image into a plurality of sub-fields to carry out a gradation display, the device is provided with a MPD detector 60 to obtain the possibility of occurrence of a pseudo-outline noise as a noise quantity (MPD value) and a MPD diffuser 70 to carry out a diffusion processing for reducing the pseudo-outline noise to an area where the occurrence of a pseudo-outline in an image is estimated on the MPD value. The MPD detector 60 has a MPD value computer 62 to compute the MPD value, an excluded area detector 64 to detect an area where the diffusion processing is not carried out, and a subtracter 66 to exclude an excluded area from an area where the MPD value is obtained.
