The invention relates to an agent for the gene therapeutic inhibition of tissue regeneration, especially the inhibition of tissue proliferation and the decrease of exuberant healing processes. The invention is preferably used for inhibiting restenosis after balloon angioplasty. The essential item of the invention is an agent consisting of a recombinant vector which contains a sequence that codes for a fusion protein comprised of the c-myb-DNA-binding domain and consisting of a transcription repressor. In a preferred embodiment, an engrailed gene is used as a transcription repressor. The invention especially relates to an agent that contains the sequence which codes for the fusion protein and which is comprised of nucleotides 250-632 of c-myb fused with the nucleotides for amino acids 2-298 of the Drosophila engrailed gene followed by nucleotides 633-636 c-myb AAG CTT GAG CAG AAG CTG ATC TCC GAG GAG GAC CTG ACC TAG (myc 9E10 epitope).
