PURPOSE: A multiple disc clutch for automatic transmission discharges a centrifugal oil pressure swiftly on releasing a clutch, thereby improving the characteristics of the response of a clutch operation. CONSTITUTION: A size of an oil pressure applied on a clutch piston(55) in an oil pressure operation chamber(C) is larger than a size of the oil pressure applied on the clutch piston(55) in an oil pressure release chamber(D). A radius of a balance piston(58) is longer than a radius of the oil pressure operation chamber(C). A first inner peripheral surface of the clutch piston(55) has a relatively short radius and a second inner peripheral surface of the clutch piston(55) has a radius longer than the radius of the first inner peripheral surface and the radius of the oil pressure operation chamber(C). The balance piston(58) is mounted inside the second inner peripheral surface of the clutch piston(55).
