The circuit has a first choke coil (L1), a second choke coil (L2) and a capacitor (C1) as well as a bridge circuit across these elements that is caused by a drive circuit to bridge the second coil and the capacitor or to integrate them into the current supply. A triac (Q1) in the bridge circuit opens and closes the bridge circuit. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a gas discharge lamp.
