An ink fed printer has a print head (94) with an array of nozzles (92) that have built in energising stages that result in droplets (96) being generated. Electrical connections to the energising stages are provided by contact elements (90) built as a panel in one of the sides of the head unit. With the head mounted on the carriage (102) the contact panel mates with a similar unit (100). Internal conductors within the carriage allows coupling to a ribbon connector (86) that allows flexibility while the carriage is in motion. Alternatively the contact elements are located in the base of the head to make direct contact with a connector panel on the carriage.
