PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of individually and independently controlling the contrast and brightness of a video signal and the brightness of plural backlight with accuracy correspondingly to the brightness signal and brightness distribution of a very small area, and capable of realizing the expansion of the dynamic range of a video signal and the decrease of the power consumption. SOLUTION: Brightness distribution filters 7A, 7B correspond to two pieces of backlight 6A, 6B. Brightness distribution extracting circuits 8A, 8B determine an area occupying ratio for every brightness level of one field or one frame of an input video signal, and supply it to a control circuit 9. The control circuit 9 calculates a picture control variable from this area duty factor at each brightness level and controls contrast and brightness in a picture quality control circuit 3, and also simultaneously performs brightness control operation of the backlight 6A, 6B.
