The mobile vehicular repeater unit enters the extended coverage mode of operation in response to the reception of an access request, transmitted by one o the plurality of portable units. The mobile vehicular repeater unit transmits the identification representative signal of the upper and lower frequency channel portions to the portable unit in response to the request.
