PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hydrophilizing, capable of continuously conducting the hydrophilic treatment of excellent durability on the whole of a porous material including its mass at a low cost, and to provide a method for producing a battery separator. SOLUTION: This method for hydrophilizing comprises holding the porous material between dielectric materials of an electric discharging apparatus which is structured to have a pair of electrodes each supporting the dielectric materials and to arrange the dielectric materials so as to face to each other, applying an alternating voltage to the electrodes so that the electric discharge is generated, subjecting the porous material to the electric discharge, and making the porous material subjected to the electric discharge contact with a surfactant solution in an atmosphere of a temperature of >=50 deg.C. The battery separator is produced by the same method as the hydrophilic treatment is conducted.
