An insertion/detection method of a watermark for authenticating reliability of a digital image is provided to avoid adding a supplemental code, such as an encryption code, to a file which is not a JPEG(Joint Photographic Coding Experts Group)/ MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) file in order to completely block an attack such as encryption code deciphering. A coefficient obtained by DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) and a lookup table is used in insertion of a watermark. A flat region and a non-flat region are separated from an original image by a threshold value. The flat region is sequentially linked to the non-flat region. Watermark image data, data in a link buffer and data in the lookup table are compared with each another and thereby watermark data of digital image data is inserted into the original image.
