PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-holding agent for growing plants with a little amount of which favorable water-holding property is expected and which does not inhibit growth and/or root extension of the plants. SOLUTION: The water-holding agent for growing plants contains highly water-absorbing resin (X): wherein the electric conductivity of a water-absorbing body when 100 pts.wt. of 25°C ion-exchange water is absorbed in 1 pts.wt. of the water-absorbing resin (X) is 0-2.0 mS/cm, and the pressure-absorbing amount of the water-absorbing resin (X) based on the weight of the resin (X) is 10-35 g/g, and the water-absorbing magnification of the 25°C ion-exchange water of the resin (X) is 80-1,000 times.
