PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrochemical element using a solid high-polymer electrolytic membrane which is capable of maintaining the performance of the electrochemical element in a highly moist environment stably for a long period of time and is thin in thickness and light in weight. SOLUTION: This electrochemical element is constituted by holding an electrochemical element joined body 10, which is formed by respectively integrally joining an anode 1 and cathode 2 having catalysts to the front and rear of the solid high-polymer electrolytic membrane 3, to a base material consisting of a conductive porous body, between a pair of pressing plates 30 and 31 having apertures 32 smaller than the area of the electrochemical reaction section formed by disposing the anode and cathode facing each other, and pressuring the same.
