Apparatus for printing monetary transfer documents such as cheques comprises a plurality of stations 12-15, Fig. 3, for printing on a web supplied by a roll 10, each station including an impression roller 18 and a plate cylinder 16 having a retractable section 19 carrying a printing surface, and a pair of further printing stations 23, 24, Fig. 4, at which the printed web 61 is printed with personalized information by computer-controlled printers. The fully printed web is cut by a pair of disc-type rotary cutters 26 which slit it longitudinally and remove waste 8 and by a shear cutter 28 which cuts it transversely. Cutters 26 may be re-sited to produce left-hand cheque books. The cut sheets 30 are removed by a conveyer 29. The web may be serrated at 22 and re-reeled before overprinting. Rotary printing apparatus.-Cylinder 16 at station 12 prints a background tint on five cheques and a line outline of a credit slip, the credit slip plate is mounted on section 19 and may be tripped as required. At station 13 a second colour is overprinted on the web. At station 14 the reverse side of the web is printed and the plate on the respective section 19 prints the reverse side of the credit slip if required. At 15 the original side of the web is printed by a plate carrying " re-order " information on the respective section 19. In operation cylinders at stations 12- 14 make five complete revolutions with their sections 19 operative and a sixth with the sections retracted; the section 19 at station 15 is only operative during the said sixth revolution. Selective computer-controlled printing.-At 23, branch variables and cheque numbers are printed and at 24 the account number, the branch code and the cheque numbers are printed in magnetic or magnetizable ink. Information is fed into the printers at 23, 24 from a computer control centre supplied with coded information derived from a punched card or analogous information store system relating to a particular account. Both computer controlled printers at 23 and 24 print different personalized information on adjacent cheques. |
