Compounds of the general formula (R 1 =H, Me; R 2 =Me, OMe, OEt, Cl or (when R 1 = Me) H; m =0-10) and their salts are prepared by reducing a compound of the formula (R<SP>1</SP>=H or protecting group; R<SP>11</SP>=H, PhCH 2 ) and removing any protecting groups present, optionally followed by salt formation and/or resolution. The starting materials may be prepared by reacting a compound of the formula (X=Cl, Br) with a compound of the formula in the presence of a condensing agent. The preparation of the haloacetophenone derivatives and the parent acetophenone derivatives is described. The above compounds possess broncholytic, itch-alleviating and anti-allergic activity, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them in association with a carrier.
