POLYARYLOXYSULFONES AND PROCESS THEREFOR

The invention comprises a polymer consisting of units of formula -[-L-A-]-wherein A is an aromatic group, and in from 10 t0 50% of the units L represents the linkage -O-, and in the other units L represents the linkage each aromatic group represented by A being connected to no more than one linkage L represented by -O-. The polymer is obtained by heating in the presence of an anhydrous Lewis acid a compound of formula R(SO2)Xy with a compound of formula R1(SO2)Xw, where R is y-valent aryl group containing at least two aromatic rings, R1 is w-valent aryl group containing at least two aromatic rings, y is 2 when w is 0 and y is 1 when w is 1, and X is bromine or chlorine, the compounds R(SO2)Xy and R1(SO2)Xw and their proportions being chosen so that in the polymer in 10 to 50% of the units L is -O-. In examples, polymers are prepared from diphenyl ether disulphonylchloride, dimethylsulphone and diphenyl ether, p,p1-biphenyl disulphonylchloride and diphenyl ether, 2,8-dibenzofuran disulphonylchloride and diphenyl ether, 2,7-naphthalene disulphonylchloride and diphenyl ether, diphenyl ether disulphonylchloride and diphenylmethane, p-diphenyl ether monosulphonylchloride and dimethylsulphone, p-diphenyl ether sulphonylchloride, p-biphenylsulphonylchloride and dimethylsulphone, 2-dibensofuran sulphonylchloride and dimethylsulphone, dibenzodioxin monosulphonylchloride and dimethylsulphone, 2-naphthalene sulphonylchloride and dimethylsulphone, and from 2,7-naphthalene disulphonylchloride and biphenyl; ferric chloride is used as the catalyst.
