PURPOSE: A method is provided to expand the effectiveness of a temperature sensor as well as enhance the accuracy of temperature measurement. CONSTITUTION: After a cold start, the variation with time of the temperature is measured in or downstream of the catalytic converter, and a temperature plateau is determined. The measured temperature value of the plateau is compared with a value of the temperature plateau previously measured using a calibrated or new temperature sensor. The difference between the values is used to calibrate the temperature sensor. Alternatively, at least one temperature sensor is disposed and protected as a reference sensor avoiding contact with an exhaust gas. The adjusted temperature values of the temperature sensor and reference sensor are approximately the same at least one point. The difference between temperature values is used to calibrate the temperature sensor. |
