A linear trimer of p-isopropenyl phenol having the formula:

is provided which can be readily prepared, easily isolated and is useful as a curing agent for epoxy resins. The linear trimer may be a cis-isomer (m.p. 225.5-227 DEG C) and a transisomer (m.p. 167-168 DEG C). It can be prepared by reacting p-isopropenyl phenol or a linear polymer thereof in the presence of an acid catalyst such as sulphuric acid, boron fluoride or activated clay and an organic solvent such as an aromatic hydrocarbon, halogenated hydrocarbon, substituted aromatic hydrocarbon or aprotic polar solvent (e.g. benzene, carbon tetrachloride, nitrobenzene or dioxane).
