The drive system stores and re-uses surplus energy by charging a battery. The system has a conventional combustion engine coupled via a clutch to the vehicle's drive wheels. The engine is also coupled to a rotating machine that acts either as a motor or as a generator depending on the vehicle mode. The machine (3) has a flat rotor and is connected to the output shaft (2) of the engine (1) and via the clutch (4) to the gears (6) coupled to the wheels. The machine when acting as a generator charges a battery (11), (a rapid charge/discharge type). The advantage lies in simplicity and efficiency.
