PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a honeycomb heater exhibiting a good cleaning performance by using a small amount of electric power, and its operation method. SOLUTION: This honeycomb heater has a plurality of through holes which are partitioned by partition walls consisting of a conductive material and are substantially parallel to the gas flow direction, and includes a honeycomb structure having both end faces at a gas outlet side and a gas inlet side, and at least two electrodes 5 installed on the honeycomb structure for applying current. A catalyst layer is carried on the partition wall so as to cover the wall. When current is applied, resistance is controlled so that a specified region including at least the vicinity of the gas inlet side end face can be locally heated more quickly than the other regions. The area of the specified region that is locally quickly heated ranges from 5 to 50% of a gas passing cross section. |
