PURPOSE:To decrease the electric resistance on the surface of a magnetic layer formed on a substrate so as to suppress generation of noise and drop-outs and to improve an electromagnetic conversion characteristic by implanting ions in a vacuum atmosphere to the surface of said magnetic layer to form a carbide layer thereon. CONSTITUTION:After the magnetic layer contg. a binder resin is coated and formed on the substrate, the ions of high energy are implanted to the surface thereof in a vacuum chamber to form the carbide layer consisting of amorphous carbon. This carbide layer is conductive and has an antistatic function to prevent the generation of the noise and drop-outs by electric charge. Said layer prevents sticking during traveling and improves the electromagnetic conversion characteristic. The ions to be implanted are selected from Ar, N2, Ti, and Si.
