Metallic profiled rod is produced in a two stage process whereby a metal block is heated to a temperature suitable for plastic deformation, extruded through a die (7) and then rolled (8) at a similar temperature. The speed of entry of the extruded rod into the rolling stand is regulated with respect to the speed of exit from the extruded so as to maintain a uniform minimum tensile force between the extruder and rolling stand. ADVANTAGE - Productivity is increased as the extrusion process is restricted to producing circular cross-sections which can be carried out at high speeds. The profiling of the cross-section is left to the rolling stage.
