The present invention describes a device and a process for carrying out a multitude of parallel enzymatic of chemical reactions expected to yield different products whose functionality must be determined by simultaneous or successive analysis. The process provides a method of non-cellular molecular cloning, i.e. the separate amplification of defined nucleic acid sequences. It provides for carrying out molecular evolutive optimization experiments with up to 100 million molecular structures that can be examined separately, individually or in dilute mixtures as to their desired function. The process can also be carried out with cells and combined with a number of other analytical and reaction processes.
