Motor vehicle alternator with voltage regulator

An AC generator (10) followed by a rectifier (11) with a voltage regulator (13) i.e. an alternator, includes a current limiter for the field current and a detector for the rectifier output voltage. A protective device controls the limiter according to whether the measured voltage is greater or less than a threshold. The rectifier elements all have intrinsic breakdown voltages, the lowest of which is higher than this threshold. There is a temperature compensation device for the fluctuations in voltage caused by changes in the temperature surrounding the regulator. There is a relay to switch the generator output between a low voltage and a high voltage load(3,5).
