The smoothing device has a deflection device, with a pair of parallel deflection rollers (2a,2b), displaced perpendicularly relative to the transport path defined by pairs of cooperating guide rollers (1a,1b ; 1c,1d), for compensating curling of the recording web (4) resulting from fixing. The guide rollers lie on either side of the deflection rollers, which have a relatively small diameter compared to the guide rollers. The deflection roller may have a diameter of 10mm and the guide rollers a diameter of 25 mm.
