The outer periphery of at least one support roller (1) has a sensor mechanism (13) for detecting the position of one edge (14) of the belt (2) and connected to an electronic calculator and which is protected from external effects. The sensor mechanism consists of a bar which is embedded in a cavity (11) formed in a layer (10) on the outer periphery (9) of the roller casing of the support roller. The sensor bar extends from the centre transverse plane (MQE) of the support roller to one end (4) side of the support roller.
