PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image input apparatus capable of accurately reading an image on an original, without being limited in its direction of movement, for compositing into image information, and reducing the manufacturing cost to improve its maintenance. SOLUTION: The image input apparatus for manually scanning an original and reading the image by a line image sensor 210 comprises optical position detectors 202, 203 on an extension of both ends of a line image sensor 20. The optical position detectors 202, 203 detect the position of the image input apparatus itself in synchronization with the image reading by the line image sensor 20. Based on the position information acquired from the optical position detectors 202, 203, a group of image information acquired from the line image sensor 20 is composited into one sheet of image information.
