PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce deterioration in the image quality in the case of occurrence of a plurality of adjacent defective pixels without the need for employing a status adaptive interpolation method (employing different processing according to circumstances). SOLUTION: First, defective data are read from an EEPROM and compensation processing with respect to defective pixels is carried out in the order of memory addresses registered in the EEPROM 118 (steps S11, S12). The defective data are read in the order of memory addresses and the 'defect compensation processing by four adjacent pixels' is applied to a defective pixel in the order of read defective pixel addresses. In this case, since the EEPROM stores defective data of the defective pixels sequentially in the order of addresses of defective pixels with a greater defective level, when defective pixels exist adjacently to each other, that is, when a plurality of defects, where defective pixel addressed of compensation objects are adjacent to each other, exist, the defect compensation processing is carried out for defective pixels having a greater defect level with priority.
