PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly perform compressed self-ignition while suppressing the occurrence of knocking in subsequent cylinders. SOLUTION: In this control device of a spark ignition engine, in a special operation mode, burned gas discharged from preceding cylinders 2A and 2D is led into the subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C in an intake stroke through an inter-cylinder passage 22 so as to form a two-cylinder connected state, and in the subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C, combustion is performed by supplying fuel to burned gas led from the preceding cylinders 2A and 2D. The control device comprises an ignition assist means 46 promoting the compressed self-ignition of the subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C. In a low speed and low load range in a partial laod area where combustion is performed in the special operation mode, the air-fuel ratio of the preceding cylinders 2A and 2D is set to two times a theoretical air-fuel ratio or more, and the compressed self-ignition of the subsequent cylinders 2B and 2C is promoted by the ignition assist means 46.
