A composition comprising at least one compound selected from the group consisting of metal compounds each having one phosphine ligand per metal atom or a combination of the compound(s) and a compound having at least two members selected from the group consisting of the following (a) to (c): (a) at least one element having an atomic number equal to or higher than 3 and selected from the elements in group I, II, XI, XII and XIII in the periodic table, (b) an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms which may have a substituent and/or an aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 40 carbon atoms which may have a substituent, and (c) a perchlorate group and/or a tetrafluoroborate group. This composition can be used in the polymerization of a vinyl monomer.
