PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an improper recording/reproducing operation of an existing device. SOLUTION: A medium ID area E is allocated to the TOC area of an existing MD. In this medium ID area, a groove is formed radially from the disk center, and an medium ID is recorded by the groove. In an MD device for the MD, the medium ID area E is set at tracking-OFF to carry out scanning, and medium ID data are read from the area. Recorded data are encrypted by the read medium ID to be recorded in a recordable area C. This MD is loaded in the existing MD device. Before a recording/reproducing operation, the medium ID area E is read as a TOC area. However, no tracking is set, and the MD is ejected.
