There are provided a laser beam amplifying device and a method thereof which pump a homogeneous composite source beam through an amplification medium. A slab crystalline active medium is pumped sideways by a pump module having a laser diode bar and an optical assembly. The optical assembly includes a fast axis collimator, a lens in a fast axis, an array of slow axis collimators, and a lens in a slow axis. The lenses are spaced apart from each other, such that respective source beams from emitters are imaged on a first surface of the amplification medium; has a beam waist at or near the first surface; is adjusted in size to fill the first surface; is substantially duplicated on the first surface; and is directed such that source beams from a peripheral portion experience an internal total reflection when being introduced into the amplification medium. Also described are embodiments of a plurality of laser diode bars and optical assemblies along with a double-sided pumping structure. |
