A polymerizable coating composition comprises (i) 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone, i.e. 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (2-HEMA) for forming a copolymer; (ii) polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) having a molecular weight of ≥500000 g/mol; (iii) copolymerizable crosslinker for crosslinking NVP and 2-HEMA; (iv) copolymerizable initiator for initiating copolymerisation of NVP and 2-HEMA; (v) surfactant selected from nonionic triblock copolymers of ethylene oxide/propylene oxide, nonionic triblock or tetrablock copolymers of polypropylene oxide (PPO) and polyethylene oxide (PEO), Triton (RTM) X-100 and derivatives, polyethylene glycols and derivatives, PEO derivatives of sorbitan monolaurate; and (vi) a solvent such as a water and alcohol mixture. The vinyl component present in the NVP and PVP and the acrylate component present in 2-HEMA are in a molar ratio of 10:1 to 1:10, wherein 20-80 wt.% of the vinyl component is in the PVP. Devices, especially medical devices, such as catheters, stents, and contact lenses, coated with the composition are also disclosed. |
