<p>A process and apparatus for welding together mating surfaces of two thermoplastic parts which have different melting temperatures. The process involves bringing the mating surfaces into contact with opposed heating surfaces of a heating device, which surfaces are heated by conduction from a single central heating element, separating the mating surfaces from the heating device, and then bringing these mating surfaces together to form a joint. The heating surfaces are matched in size and shape to their corresponding thermoplastic mating surfaces, and the heating device includes a conductive body portion or fin between each heating surface and the heating element, the dimensions of the fins being such, in relation to their thermal conductivity, as to give each heating surface a temperature matched to the melting temperature of the thermoplastic mating surface which it contacts.</p> |
