[Also in Division C4] A cathode luminescent, in situ surface-crystallized glass body consists essentially of: CaO 15-35%; B 2 O 3 65-85%; SiO 2 0-10%; Al 2 O 3 0-10%; Na 2 O 0-10%; K 2 O 0-10%; Li 2 O 0-5%: MnO 0-2% Sm 2 O 3 0-2%; Cd 2 O 3 0-2%; Y 2 O 3 0-2%; Dy 2 O 3 0-2% all percentages being expressed in terms of weight, the total amount of Na 2 O + K 2 O + Li 2 O + SiO 2 + Al 2 O 3 being not more than 10 weight per cent and is made by heating a surface crystallizable glass composition as defined above through the annealing point range of the said glass composition to a higher temperature but not substantially above its Littleton softening point and holding the glass composition at this higher temperature until the desired degree of surface crystallization has been obtained. These bodies may then be used to produce luminescent glass articles containing a multicolour phosphor combination grown in the surface of the glass by depositing on the surface crystallized glass body at least one layer containing an activator for the crystalline phosphor contained in the surface layer of the glass and heating as described above until there has been formed at least one layer of a crystalline activated phosphor. Alternatively a surface crystallizable glass may be heated, coated with a solution of a soluble calcium salt, heat-treated as for an uncoated glass article, cooled and a second coating such as the solution containing both a soluble calcium salt together with an activator applied, the glass body being then heat-treated as for the coated surface crystallised glass. The second coating may contain manganese so that the glass luminesces green under low voltage electron bombardment and blue at higher voltage electron bombardment. Multicolour phosphor combinations may be produced by applying the corresponding member of different potentially luminescent material coatings followed by the heat treatment for each coating. Activators mentioned include manganese and rare earth metal compounds. The glass bodies may be roughened on at least a portion of their exposed surfaces before being heattreated to form a surface crystallized layer thereon.
