The pyrolytic self-cleaning oven has a combination of heaters and a muffle whose inner space is heated to an intermediate temp. during the self-cleaning operation mode when volatile substances escape through an opening. During a succeeding main interval the temp. is raised to that needed for pyrolytic cleaning. A hot air blower and its associated heating element is dimensioned such that this system alone, i.e. without connecting in further heating elements, is sufficient to heat the oven to the intermediate temp. During self-cleaning the temp. in the oven is raised initially using full to the lower limit of the intermediate temp.
