PURPOSE:To improve the segmenting ratio of an OCR for reading the character of a microfilm by providing a means for specifying the size of the character of the microfilm according to the counted number of picture elements and a prescribed reference value and performing a segment corresponding to the size of the character. CONSTITUTION:The character of the microfilm is read from a scanner 1. In a character segmenting part 2, horizontal and vertical projections are taken, thereby, the character is segmented. In such case, by obtaining the height of the respective characters, a hyphen can be recognized in a recognizing part 3. By counting the number of the picture elements of the recognized hyphen, it is compared with a preset reference value, thereby whether the character is wide or narrow is specified.
