A roller for guiding yarn or fibre or for driving yarn reels in cross-wound reel or rotor spinning machines has (a) a cylindrical body rotating about an axis with, at least over one section (12, 13), (b) at least a pair, but esp. many gripping edges, at intervals to drive a reel with perimeter-wound yarn by conforming to the edge shapes. Also claimed is a method for driving spools where the drive roller (10) presses on the spool circumference and transmits a force to it in the circumferential direction by a shape conformation lock.
