The invention concerns a method for positioning two sheet metal blanks (15, 16) designed to be abutted by welding, which consists in squeezing one of the metal sheet flanks (16) against a reference stop (12) by moving it towards said stop (12) over a predetermined distance with jaws (2, 6) enclosing the blank to develop a force (f) clamping the blank enabling the blank (15) to slide between them when the latter comes in contact with the stop (12), and after it has travelled said distance by increasing the clamping force (p) of the jaws on the blank (15), and in removing the reference stop (12) and in squeezing the second blank (16) against the first blank (15) by the same process used for squeezing the first blank (15) against the stop (12) using a second pair of jaws (3, 7).
