Cell line (A) expressing a recombinant DNA (I) that represents an alternative splicing of the 3'-region of exon 9 of the mammalian gene for prostaglandin synthase-1 (COX-1). (I) encodes an isoform (COX-1b) that produces preferentially, from arachidonic acid, the prostaglandins D2 or 15-deoxy- DELTA (12-14) J2, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) isolated isoform COX-1b having a fully defined sequence (S2) of 562 amino acids as given in the specification; (2) isolated DNA (Ia) encoding (S2); (3) screening (M1) for compounds that inhibit or activate cyclooxygenase activity, using (A); and (4) therapeutic composition containing COX-1b or (Ia).
